Rookie one of four all-league selections for Lafayette Baseball

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman Justin Johnson was selected as the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, one of four all-league selections for the Lafayette baseball team, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon. Johnson and junior Trey Durrah were placed on the All-Patriot League First Team, while senior Spencer Rouse and sophomore Ethan Stern earned second-team laurels.

Johnson, a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week this spring, carries a .297 batting average with 16 doubles, good enough for second in the league rankings. The Glen Gardner, New Jersey native has stolen nine bases in his freshman campaign and knocked in 18 runs for the Maroon and White with a pair of long balls.

A Mathematics-Economics major, Johnson has started 48 games at shortstop for the Leopards in 2019. He's scored a team-high 35 runs on a team-best 54 hits with 14 walks in 182 at bats.

Durrah has patrolled left field for the Maroon and White throughout his junior campaign, hitting .274 with a team-high 44 RBI, ranking fourth in the Patriot League. He sits second on the team in walks with 20 bases on balls and tied for third on the squad in hits with 46 in 48 games played.

Rouse has manned the hot corner for Lafayette this spring, hitting .255 with nine doubles, tied for second on the team. Lafayette's most patient hitter in his final campaign on College Hill, he drew 29 walks this season, tied for ninth in the Patriot League rankings.

Finally, Stern took over full-time duties at second base in his sophomore year and has frustrated opposing pitchers with a Patriot League-best 15 hits by pitch this spring. Stern is hitting .264 on the year with 46 hits and 23 RBI, sending five balls over the fence, tied for second on the team.

The Maroon and White close out their regular season later this afternoon with a road tilt at Monmouth at 4 p.m. Lafayette opens up Patriot League Tournament action in the semifinal round on Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland, battling Navy at 1 p.m.
