The Crew Club took to the water to defeat Patriot League rivals Lehigh and Bucknell in three of the events at the Bucknell Fall Invitational Regatta near Northumberland, Pa., on Saturday.
Rough waters on the Susquehanna River forced the race to be shortened from the traditional four-mile distance to about 2.25 miles.
Lafayette claimed victory in the women’s JV Eight, women’s novice eight, and women’s second novice eight events.
In the JV women’s race, Lafayette opened an early lead and continued to extend it all the way to the finish line. The Lehigh boat suffered damage to the steering mechanism about halfway through the race and struggled to finish.
With novice athletes from all three schools beginning their rowing involvement about four weeks ago, the competition was at times skillful, at times ugly, but always exciting. The Lafayette novice women rowed aggressively all the way down the course in both of their events to win. In the first novice women’s eight, coxswain Maria Caggiano ’05 (Hazleton, Pa.) raised her hands in celebration as the Lafayette boat crossed the finish line in first place.
Lafayette’s varsity women’s crew finished behind Lehigh but defeated Bucknell in its race. Rowing its new racing shell, the “Barbara Irene,” Lafayette stayed close to Lehigh during the first half of the race, but the powerful Mountain Hawk crew pulled away as the finish line drew closer.
Lafayette’s varsity and novice men’s crews both finished in third place Saturday. In the varsity race, the Lafayette crew overcame some early race mistakes to pull close to Bucknell by the finish. In the novice race, the three lead boats crossed the finish line very close together, with Lehigh getting the win.
