The Crew Club dedicated its two newest racing shells after Saturday’s Lafayette vs. Pennsylvania football game.
President Arthur J. Rothkopf and his wife, Barbara, and many faculty, staff members, parents, and alumni attended the event.
With support from Lafayette administration, the club purchased a Vespoli Ultralight eight-oared shell for the women and an Ultralight four-oared shell for the men. The four-oared shell was named “Opportunity” and the names of four Lafayette administrators were placed near the boat’s gunwales: James Krivoski, dean of students; Pamela Brewer, director of student life programs; Jodie Frey, director of recreation services; and Kelly Deemer, student activities secretary, were each “given a seat” in the new four-oared shell. The eight-oared shell was named “Barbara Irene” after Barbara Rothkopf.
“She has been an angel on our shoulders as she has made appearances at our annual River Cup Regatta against Lehigh as well as checking up on us” said Lindy Mills ’02 of Rothkopf in a speech at the event. “We truly appreciate and value her dedication to our sport.” (The entire text of the speech is available at http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~crewteam/.)
Mills is in her fourth year with the Crew Club and was part of a novice women’s class of only three members four years ago. Now that number has grown to nearly 40. The club supports an overall membership of over 80 students.
“The crew club appreciates everyone who attended the ceremony and helped make the event successful,” says head coach Mike Homes. “We would like to thank Joe Samaritano and the Maroon Club and George Bright and the Athletic Department for helping arrange this event. Finally, we are grateful the five honorees mentioned above were able to take time from their busy [Family] Weekend activities to join us Saturday afternoon.”
The crew club opens the fall season Saturday, Oct. 6 with a race at Bucknell University.
