Forty-four undergraduate and alumni members of the Lafayette chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity ran in a 5K race in Washington, D.C. April 22, together raising almost $13,000 for the Brain Tumor Society.
“A success of this magnitude could serve as a model for other organizations in the Lafayette community,” says Mark Suffredini '93, a financial consultant with Salomon Smith Barney in Boston, Mass. who was one of the runners. Suffredini, who graduated with a degree in psychology, lives in Brookline, Mass.
The fraternity decided to participate in the Brain Tumor Run/Walk in support of a member with a brain tumor. Organized by volunteers, the event raised over $250,000 last year. Brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer death in adults aged 18 to 39.
The Brain Tumor Society was founded by Sid Feldman '67 and his wife Bonnie. Feldman died from cancer last summer and lost a child to a brain tumor. The group is one of the country's leading organizations “committed to a cure through research, education, and support.”
