Last month’s Relay For Life raised about $2,000 for the American Cancer Society, reports event organizer Kelly Egan ’03 (Vernon, N.J.), a psychology major and president of the Keefe Hall Volunteer Floor.
Over 150 people participated in the fundraiser, in which teams of four to 15 students enlisted donors and walked laps around the Kirby Sports Center outdoor track from noon to midnight on Oct. 20. Members of each group took turns walking during the 12 hours.
“The money was donated directly to the American Cancer Society and will be used to fund important scientific research and to aid in patient care services,” says Egan. “The ultimate goal of the Keefe Volunteer Floor is to make Relay For Life a tradition here at Lafayette — to raise awareness of cancer and involve Lafayette students and faculty, as well as community members, in the cause. We look forward to planning and expanding the event next fall.”
Lafayette President Arthur J. Rothkopf ’55 spoke briefly at Relay for Life, expressing how impressed he was at the organizers’ efforts and the participation of the campus community. Easton oncologist Chand Rohatgi also gave a talk, commending Lafayette for holding the fundraiser.
Following the speeches, luminaries were lit in honor of specific people who have battled cancer. Participants walked by the luminaries to pay their respects.
The event closed with a performance by Not Today, a Lafayette student rock band.
“We were overwhelmed with the quantity of donations that we received from Giant, Weis, Dominoes, Pizza Hut, and Subway,” adds Egan. “Throughout the day, we had music from WJRH, the college radio station, and local radio station 99.9 FM, ‘The Hawk.’ The enthusiasm of the DJs contributed to the overall energy of the event.”
