Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., gave Craig S. Higgins ’65 its Louise F. Hegarty Excellence in Teaching Award. As associate professor and chair of the school’s Health Care Administration undergraduate program, Higgins plans and executes curricula and oversees management of the department. He has served as board president for the college’s Old Colony Hospice and now chairs the “Hospice House” committee formed to provide residential inpatient beds for hospice patients and families.
In presenting Higgins with the award, Katie Conboy, vice president for academic affairs, praised him for his active role in student life, his enthusiasm about health care administration, and his dedication to teaching. “Professor Craig Higgins puts tremendous heart into teaching,” she said. “His method of teaching includes not only stimulating his students to develop critical thinking skills related to health care issues, but also helping to build their self-confidence.”
An English graduate, Higgins recalls former English department head Willy Watt’s extremely tough grading system, which didn’t prevent him from enjoying the subject. “The rigor of the program–the challenge–was something that has helped me at several points in my career,” he says. “Overall, it was a very powerful and good experience that prepared me extremely well for whatever I decided to do.”
Prior to joining Stonehill in 1981, Higgins was a policy science analyst and consultant for The National Center for Health Services Research in Washington D.C., an administrator for The Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, and served in Vietnam as a lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps.
He has been named to Who’s Who in Health Care and the Dictionary of Distinguished Americans. He is a recipient of the Basil Moreau Medallion from Stonehill, which honors the most influential persons in the 50-year history of the College.
Higgins earned an M.H.A. from Duke University and an M.B.A. from Loyola College. In 1985, he earned a Ph.D. from the University in Maryland in policy sciences, with a concentration in health policy.
