Six college a cappella groups will visit Lafayette for the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella Mid-Atlantic Region Semi-Finals 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in Colton Chapel.

Tickets cost $5 for students and $10 for others. They can be purchased in advance at the Farinon Center during lunch next week, through The Chorduroys’ website (ww2.lafayette.edu/~chords), or at the door. For more information, call Amy Ahart ’97 at 610-330-5031.

Semifinalists include the co-ed groups Deep Treble from Rutgers University, whose diverse and exciting repertoire includes everything from The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” to Dar Williams’ “What Do You Hear in These Sounds,” and Binghamton’s Rhythm Method, featuring ’80’s music. Also competing are The Clefhangers, from Columbia University, a co-ed group with contemporary pop songs such as U2’s “Mysterious Ways” in their repertoire. Also representing Columbia University is High Bias, a male R&B a cappella group. Cornell University will bring the male group Last Call, which has recorded two CDs with songs ranging from Billy Joel’s “Allentown” to “Runaround Sue” by Dion and the Belmonts, and the co-ed group Class Notes, which covers songs by bands such as U2, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Peter Gabriel, Indigo Girls, and Seal.

Each group will perform a 15-minute set. While the judges deliberate, Cadence and The Chorduroys, Lafayette’s female and male a cappella groups, respectively, will entertain the crowd with old favorites and some new additions to their repertoires.

Lafayette’s hosting of the event is sponsored Friends of Lafayette Music as well as Cadence and The Chorduroys. Results of the competition will determine which group advances to the International Championship Collegiate A Cappella Finals at Lincoln Center in New York in April.
