WOOLLEY AWARDED GUGGENHEIM FELLOWSHIP
James Woolley, Frank Lee and Edna M. Smith Professor of English, has
been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for research on the poems of
Jonathan Swift. Woolley is one of 184 recipients selected by the
Guggenheim Memorial Foundation from more than 2,800 applicants in the
United States and Canada.

TWO STUDENTS WIN GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS
Daniel Ruddy ’03 and Alyssa Picchini ’04 have been awarded Goldwater
Scholarships, the nation’s premier award in math, science, and
engineering. They were among 309 outstanding students chosen from 1,155
nominated nationwide. This is the third year in a row a Lafayette
student has won.

OFFNER ON C-SPAN2 MAY 4 & 5
Arnold Offner, Cornelia F. Hugel Professor of History, will discuss his
book “Another Such Victory: President Truman and the Cold War,
1945-1953,” on C-SPAN2’s “Book TV” Saturday, May 4, at 11 p.m. and
Sunday, May 5, at 8 p.m. The show will be taped from his lecture at the
Woodrow Wilson Center for International Studies in Washington, D.C.

MILLER PLAYS MAJOR ROLE IN PBS PROGRAM “ULYSSES S. GRANT”
Donald Miller, John Henry MacCracken Professor of History, played an
important role in the production of “Ulysses S. Grant,” premiering on
PBS television May 5 and 12. Miller worked with the scriptwriter, served
as a consultant, and appears on the show to provide his expertise on
Grant and the Battle of Vicksburg, one of the crucial battles of the
Civil War.

CONNOLLY ’01 WINS TOP HONORS AT RESEARCH COMPETITION
Chemical engineering major Daniel Connolly ’01 won first prize for his
research presentation at the mid-Atlantic regional conference of the
American Institute of Chemical Engineers at Virginia Polytechnic
Institute. Connolly, a Marquis Scholar, will present his work at the
institute’s national meeting in Indianapolis, Ind., in November.

STUDENTS PRESENT RESEARCH AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE
About three dozen students have been invited to make presentations on
their research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research
(NCUR) April 25-27 at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. This
year’s presenters will bring the number of Lafayette students who have
participated in NCUR to nearly 400.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE CLINCHES TOP SPOT; WILL HOST CHAMPIONSHIP
Leopards pounded archrival Lehigh 19-5 Tuesday to remain undefeated in
league play with a 5-0 record and earned the right to host the Patriot
League Championships at Rappolt Field April 27 & 28.

BASEBALL UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE PLAY
Baseball has a perfect record in Patriot League play this season at 8-0,
its best start ever in the league. Its 10-game winning streak was
stopped by non-conference Monmouth Tuesday. Baseball will face Navy this
weekend.

CREW WINS GOLD MEDAL
For the second consecutive year, the Crew Club has brought home a gold
medal from the Knecht Cup Regatta in Cherry Hill, N.J. The novice men’s
four cruised to victory in its heat and won the final by open water.

GREEKS HOST RICH THORPE ’89 MEMORIAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Chi Phi and Alpha Gamma Delta will host the inaugural Rich Thorpe ’89
Memorial Tennis Tournament Saturday. Thorpe, a Chi Phi alumnus, died
Sept. 11 in the World Trade Center attacks. Proceeds from the tournament
will go to his family’s trust fund.
