Cagley, Harman & Associates, Inc., the structural engineering firm of D. Kirk Harman ’77, is engaged in one of the biggest, most spectacular projects it has undertaken to date: the 4-million-square-foot Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, currently under construction and scheduled for completion in 2002.
“Our client calls it their billion-dollar building,” says Harman. “The structure is tall-48 stories-and on the coast where it’s subject to hurricanes. The sheer size demands that we be very effective.”
Other projects underway or in design include Marriott Conference and Cultural Center, Trenton, N.J., the $500 million expansion and faade replacement of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Avenue of the Arts parking structure.
Harman, who is president of the firm, majored in civil engineering and earned a master’s in structural engineering at Drexel University.
“In 1981 I went to work with Jim Cagley in Rockville, Md., and in 1984 we opened offices in King of Prussia, Pa.,” says Harman. “Now we have a staff of about 35, mostly engineers. We’re one of the largest structural engineering firms in the Philadelphia region.”
The firm’s portfolio includes schools and universities, hospitals, industrial and office buildings, and churches. The company was involved in many recently completed hotels in Center City Philadelphia, including Hyatt Regency at Penn’s Landing, the conversion of the historic Mellon Bank building into the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, and the conversion and expansion of the former Philadelphia Stock Exchange Building into Sofitel Philadelphia.
