Having begun his career at West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. in 1992 as vice president, scientific services, Donald E. Morel Jr. ’79 was promoted in May to president and chief executive officer. Headquartered in Lionville, Pa., the company is a leader in developing new methods of drug delivery.
How drugs enter the body is an integral part of pharmaceutical research and development. Morel explains, “Depending on the nature of the molecule to be delivered, we get involved with all stages of the process.” West is working to develop a nasally administered form of morphine to treat pain in cancer patients and to bring nasal vaccines to market.
A metallurgical engineering graduate, Morel holds a Ph.D. from Cornell. “My most memorable professor at Lafayette was Leon McGeady. He had a terrific sense of humor and told a great story,” says Morel.
Prior to joining West, Morel conducted research on advanced materials for space applications as well as microgravity materials processing with NASA. He was a finalist in the NASA astronaut selection process in 1989 as a mission specialist.
