Joining speakers that included a Supreme Court justice and senior judges of the U.S. Courts of Appeal, David Farer ’75 gave a talk on U.S. environmental issues at a three-day international law symposium in London last April. A partner and environmental department chair at Farer Fersko, Westfield, N.J., he lectured on the effect of environmental law and litigation on business and real-estate transactions.
“The most exciting aspect was the opportunity to speak on environmental issues before people like Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Chief Judge Edward Becker of the Third Circuit, Circuit Judge Patrick Higgenbotham of Dallas, Circuit Judge Anthony Scirica of Philadelphia, and U.S. District Judge Jack Weinstein of Brooklyn,” says Farer.
Farer also participated in an insurance trends session, where he spoke on the use of new environmental insurance products for brownfields, and on a bankruptcy issues panel, where he addressed environmental claims. The event was sponsored by American Law Institute, American Bar Association, Law Society of England and Wales, and European Company Lawyers Association.
A history and music graduate who earned a J.D. at Boston University, Farer says Lafayette left him well grounded in critical skills such as writing, logic, and the use of arguments.
“From my history studies, I learned the inextricable link between political institutions and economic institutions,” Farer says. “From the English department, I learned the high value of elegance and economy in prose, which is critical for any writer, including a lawyer. From music, I learned the way that sound is organized into beauty.”
Farer is the author of ISRA Compliance: Environmental Issues in Transactions, ECRA/ISRA Compliance (third edition), and Underground Storage Tank Law (second edition). He is on the Board of Advisers of Toxics Law Reporter and Real Estate/ Environmental Liability News.
