As the new vice president, Value-Based Six Sigma, for ITT Industries, Inc., Steven F. Gaffney ’96 is responsible for operational excellence. Reporting to the chairman, he provides leadership to develop strategy, policy, and objectives, and plans to continue integrating VBSS into all operations.

“I was originally a member of the class of 1981, but took time off from college and went to work. Eventually I returned part-time and finished at night. Dr. Hornfeck helped me complete the requirements for my B.S. in electrical engineering by 1996,” says Gaffney, whose son, Steven Gaffney ’06, intends to major in government and law.

To ensure continuous improvement through VBSS, Gaffney says he will focus on five imperatives: operational excellence, value-based product development, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma problem-solving tools, and leadership development.

Gaffney joined ITT in 1998 as vice president and director of programs in the avionics division, and was named president of the division in 2000. Avionics is part of the company’s defense business and has several key programs in the electronic warfare sector. Previously, he was director of Litton Industries’ Integrated Systems business, and served in a similar role before that with Allied Signal’s Government Electronic Systems unit.
