A balloon launch will highlight a carnival hosted by Delta Upsilon fraternity on the Quad noon-5 p.m. Sunday.

Proceeds will benefit Boys and Girls Club of Easton. Last year’s Balloon Launch raised over $1,000.

The event will include games such as Moonbounce, Joust, Wheel of Prizes, Shave the Balloon, Dunk Tank, and volleyball. Rita’s Italian ice will be provided by Panhellenic Council.

The winner of a raffle will get to ride with a guest to a landing port in New Jersey. Tickets cost one for $3 or two for $5. Balloonatics and Aeronuts of Phillipsburg is providing the balloon and sponsoring one of the rides.

“Based on the annual Balloon Launch that DU has done for the past two years, we have since involved the children of the Boys and Girls Club and have made it a carnival for the College, the club and the community,” says Matt Metzger ’05 (Fanwood, N.J.), vice president of public relations for Delta Upsilon.

The balloon consists of a rip-stop nylon envelope, wicker basket, propane burner, and flight instruments. Heated air inside the envelope creates a lighter and less dense air mass, which allows the balloon to fly. When the balloon lifts free, wind dictates the direction and speed of flight. The pilot can alter direction by simply changing altitude and finding a favorable wind.
