Joseph P. Littlejohn, assistant to the president for affirmative action and human resources development at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y., will speak on “Affirmative Action: The Challenge Before Us” 8 p.m. Thursday in the Oechsle Hall auditorium.

Littlejohn has extensive experience in all aspects of civil rights and diversity programs for government and nonprofit organizations. He has worked with affirmative action/equal employment opportunity policy and program development and implementation, social equity, contract compliance, MBE/WBE development and compliance, diversity training and programming, personnel administration, employment, organizational development training, and supervision.
He has served as director of human resources and cultural diversity, Pennsylvania Legal Services, Harrisburg, 1992-96; sales/owner representative, Shawnee Development Corporation, Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pa., 1988-92; director of civil rights compliance, New Jersey Department of Transportation, Trenton, 1987-88; director of affirmative action/manager of employment, Farleigh Dickinson University, Hackensack, N.J., 1978-87; director of affirmative action programs, Jersey City State College, Jersey City, N.J., 1975-78; program manager, New York City Human Resources Administration, 1973-75; director of program development, Inter-Religious Foundation for Community Organization, New York, N.Y., 1972-73; and equal employment opportunity officer, Region 2, U.S. General Services Administration, New York, N.Y., 1970-71.
Littlejohn has been a consultant for National Urban League, New York; Newburgh Community Action Agency, Newburgh, N.Y.; United Church of Christ, New York; NAACP National Office, New York; Seton Hall University, Orange, N.J.; AT&T Bell Laboratories, Whippany, N.J.; Southern College of Technology, Marietta, Ga.; and Ron Jackson Associates, Harrisburg, Pa.
He has been on the board of Orange County United Fund, Newburgh, N.Y.; Hudson County Opportunities Industrialization Center, Jersey City, N.J.; Mary McCloud Bethune Scholarship Fund, Hackensack, N.J.; and NAACP New York, Jersey City, Harrisburg and Monroe County, Pa., and Albany, NY. He has served as regional director and national second and first vice president of American Association for Affirmative Action, and been a member of Greater Harrisburg United Negro College Fund Advisory Committee, Unity Coalition of the Poconos, and One Hundred Black Men of Albany.
Littlejohn has been honored by American Association for Affirmative Action, New York State NAACP, New Jersey Association for Affirmative Action in Higher Education, and NAACP of Harrisburg, Pa.
He received an honorable discharge from the United States Army as a major in the Signal Corps.
Littlejohn earned a master’s in public administration from New York University, a bachelor’s in sociology from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J., and a mediation certificate from Lancaster Center for Mediation, Lancaster, Pa.
