Delta Upsilon fraternity raised $1,500 for the Boys and Girls Club of Easton April 27 through a carnival on the Quad that included a balloon launch.

Economics and business major Ray Weigel ’03 (Cranford, N.J.) won the raffle for a free balloon ride with a guest, choosing A.B. engineering major Christian Swain ’03 (Framingham, Mass.) to join him for the flight to a landing port in New Jersey.

Student Government incorporated a barbecue and volleyball games into the event, Tri-Delt sorority ran a dunk tank, and Panhellenic Council provided Rita’s Italian ice.

Games included Moonbounce, Joust, Wheel of Prizes, and Shave the Balloon.

“It was a great day for everyone to get outside and enjoy themselves while supporting a good cause,” says chemical engineering major Matt Metzger ’05 (Fanwood, N.J.), vice president of public relations for DU. “The Balloon Launch and carnival are something the Brothers of Delta Upsilon are very proud of, and we hope to carry on the tradition in years to come.”

According to Metzger, those helping make the event a success include Panhellenic Council, Tri-Delt, and Student Government; Balloonautics and Aeronuts of Phillipsburg, N.J. (balloon), Fun Affairs (games), and Marsilio’s restaurant; Associate Dean of Students Pam Brewer, Special Assistant to the Dean of Students Amy Ahart ’97, Student Activities secretary Kelly Deemer, adviser to fraternities and sororities Eliot Sokalsky, and Plant Operations; economics and business major John Zembron ’04 (Ridgefield, Conn.), Chris Erickson, Gunard Travaglini, and DU alumni.

Last year’s balloon launch event raised over $1,000 for Boys and Girls Club of Easton.

Lafayette’s sororities and fraternities devote a significant amount of time every year to collectively raising over $20,000 for philanthropic causes and volunteering in the community (see related story).
