“I’ve been wanting to write this book for several years,” says Martin Clark ’87, author of Communication Landmines! 18 Communication Catastrophes and How to Avoid Them, published in March by Liberty Press. “In a world where we’re forced to communicate faster and faster, more and more mistakes are being made–common mistakes that are easily avoided. I wanted to help readers set themselves apart by becoming excellent communicators.”

Effective communication is Clarke’s stock-in-trade. Through his company, Martin Productions, he delivers custom training programs, provides corporate consulting, and makes public-speaking appearances. “When I was a marketing executive, I started getting requests from companies that had a great product but lacked a vibrant, compelling marketing message. I formed my company in 2001 to help those organizations.”

Clarke, an English graduate, says the Lafayette English program required him to sharpen his analytical and communication skills. “The experience of being an English major was easily the best corporate training I’ve ever received,” he says. “The point of the book is that the person with the best communication skills is going to emerge from his or her peers as a leader. My experience at Lafayette set me on that course.”

Clarke lives in Raleigh, N.C., with his wife, Jane Stewart Clarke ’89. His book is available from amazon.com and martinproduction.com.
