For his contributions to the black community of York County, Pa., Michael Newsome ’75 was honored recently at the Ninth Annual African/Afro-American Love Feast and Recognition Dinner. The Emmanuel Church of God in Christ of York sponsored the event.
Newsome, controller at the York Daily Record newspaper, serves as treasurer of the York County Heritage Trust. He is a member of the board of advisors of Penn State-York and the finance committee of the York Foundation. Active in the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, he chaired its diversity committee. Newsome is also known for sharing his accounting and other fiscal expertise with small businesses, churches, and community groups.
“Several years ago the York Chamber of Commerce began trying to get more minority-owned businesses to join and become more successful. I got involved with helping these small businesses get their books together,” says Newsome. “I didn’t charge for my services, and was able to help a lot of businesses and nonprofits.” Newsome says he plans to continue his pro bono accounting work, for which he earned a consultant award from the York Chamber’s Office of Minority Business Development.
Newsome, a mathematics graduate, lives in West Manchester Township.
