A news story in the April 18, 2003 Connecticut Post announced that Katherine Okon, a Monroe resident who attends Lauralton Hall in Milford, was one of nine students from Connecticut named semi-finalists for the prestigious Presidential Scholar Program.
She is among approximately 500 high school seniors nationally who will be considered for the scholarships by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars.
“I was just thrilled,” said Okon, a CTTeens member at the Connecticut Post. “Originally there were 2,600 students in the country allowed to submit an application.”
Okon said she will attend Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, where she hopes to major in government or law.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars will now select up to 121 academic scholars and up to 20 arts scholars from among the semi-finalists.
Those chosen as scholars will be honored in Washington in June during National Recognition Week, when they are awarded the Presidential Scholar medallions in a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
