If the 2002-03 intramural year had included a preseason poll, it’s doubtful that a group of chemical engineering majors would have been picked to finish among the contenders for the McGaughey Trophy.
But The Process did much better than that, exchanging first place with the FIJI fraternity during the season and eventually coming from behind to shock the league with a hard-fought, 16-point victory in the men’s Greek division.
PT Farinon went from third to first place in the latter stages of the season to beat out Keefe Hall for the men’s residence hall trophy. On the women’s side, Tri-Delt topped AGD in the Greek division and Keefe racked up 10 times as many points as its closest competitor to win the residence hall title. (Final standings are given at the end of this article.)
Members of The Process were Garret Nicodemus, Brian Root, Ryan Van Horn, Stanley Cook, Mike Barrett, Shawna Showalter, Chris Bashur, Fernando Molina, Ryan Collins, Kim Miller, Jessie Walters, Jessica Brody, and chemical engineering professors James Ferri and Javad Tavakoli.
Members of Tri-Delt were Jessica Abel, Shana Merrill, Danielle Yesuvida, Vanessa Greaves, Marissa Damiano, Sheila Town, Michele Lortz, Victoria Prone, Louise Boudart, Kate McGee, Julie Niblock, Laney Wyatt, Andrea Kotrosits, Katie Barillas, Jennifer Carty, Danielle Neufell, Thea Fry, and Jess Whitman.

The Process picked up some key points when it successfully defended last year’s outdoor volleyball title during tournaments held April 7 through May 5 in the Sullivan Lane lot. Most Valuable Player Ryan Van Horn, Brian Root, Shawna Showalter, Stanley Cook, and Garret Nicodemus led their team to victory over Kappa Delta Rho in the finals, 16-14 and 15-12. KDR had won all six of its regular season contests compared to a 5-1 mark by The Process. Gates Hall and PT Farinon both finished in third place.
On the women’s side, Showalter earned Most Valuable Player honors while teaming up with Karen Dunlap, Whitney Sanders, and Megan Jackson as the unaffiliated TBA squad to prevail over Keefe Hall, 15-6 and 15-4. Both teams went 5-0 in the regular season. AGD and Alpha Phi tied for third place. Seven men’s teams and six women’s teams competed in the tournaments.
Brian Root earned another event victory for The Process when his disc nailed the statue of the Marquis de Lafayette behind Hogg Hall in the sudden death playoff of Frisbee golf. Root logged scores of 48 on both days of competition, May 1-2, in defeating Brian Jennings of PT Farinon. AGD swept its division, as Amanda Ohs finished first with a score of 59 and Abby O’Connor came in second.
Both Greek champions excelled in co-ed tennis, with Tennis Club founders Shana Merrill (Tri-Delt) and Brian Shubert (independent and Most Valuable Player) teaming up to go undefeated and defeat Nicodemus and PT Farinon’s I-Lee Hwa, 6-3, in the finals. Lauren Hugel and Mark Lodato of PT Farinon finished in third place. The tournament took place March 26 through May 2 on the Sullivan courts.
FIJI kept the men’s Greek championship race close with a victory by Paul Staub and Derek Balent in doubles golf at the Two Tees course in Forks Township on May 3. In two nine-hole contests, the winners first won 16 holes and then took 13. Delta Upsilon’s Jason Siedman and Matt Robinson earned second place; Nicodemus and Van Horn were third.
Half of FIJI participated in the slow-pitch softball competitive league, a traditional stronghold for the fraternity. The group took first and second place this year, with Most Valuable Player Mike Barba leading FIJI Fatletes over the defending champion FIJI Bombers, 13-11, in the finals. Chi Phi fraternity would have competed in the title game, but had to bow out in order to hold its charity tennis tournament that day. The tournament ran from April 8 through May 2 at Newlin Fields, with 90 men participating.
In the recreational softball league, Tri-Delt capped off an undefeated campaign by overwhelming Alpha Gamma Delta in the finals, 15-4, with Amy Levinson earning Most Valuable Player honors. In the men’s championship, Process competed with just six of nine players on the field, keeping the game close through the first three innings before suffering a 17-2 dismantling by Most Valuable Player Jeremy Cook and his Watson Hall Walk Off squad. The champions went undefeated, barely overcoming Process in a 15-14 regular season match. The independent Team JD took third place. Forty men and 40 women competed in the tournament.
Ryan Van Horn and Brian Root gained back some of the ground lost in softball for Process by nearly taking the quoits event. However, down 10-8 on the verge of defeat, Mark Lodato and Greg Lapp of PT Farinon came back with a ringer and leaner to win. Jessie Abel and Marisa Damiano of Tri-Delt beat Amanda Ohs and Abby O’Connor of Alpha Gamma Delta in the women’s finals. The events were held April 28-30 in Kamine Gymnasium of Kirby Sports Center.
No Drama, an unaffiliated team, won the women’s flag football finals, 13-0, over Delta Gamma after going 4-0 in the regular season. The champs were Most Valuable Player Elicia Kruise, Amy Kalista, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Kim Costello, Ashley Watamura, Marissa Mullins, Kelly Hacker, Kati Kochesprar, and Meghan Ramsey. The independent Firebirds finished third. Over 90 women on 13 teams competed in the tournament, held March 27 through May 8 at Newlin Fields in Forks.
International Students Association President Volkan Oktem ’04 took first place in the “baby biathalon” April 29 in Kirby Sports Center. On the women’s side, Kim Keenan-Kirkpatrick, associate director of athletics, prevailed with a time of 17 minutes, and Alison Ligorano finished four minutes later. Among two-person co-ed teams, Matt Root of PT Farinon and Jessica Zafonte of Conway House finished first with a time of 19 minutes.
Strong wrists and superior hand-eye coordination earned Alpha Gamma Delta first and second place in foosball, with Maureen Auro and Mary Kate Giufurta reaching ten points before fellow sorority sisters Jen Stroka and Melissa Shaya both times in the best-of-three finals. Michael McConnell and Adam Hill of Chi Phi also took both finals matches, defeating Evan Nichols and Greg Lullo of Zeta Psi. Greg Lapp and Brian Jennings of PT Farinon finished third. The tournament was held April 15-16 on the third floor of Kirby Sports Center.
Recreation Services Director Jodie Frey easily bested all comers in the men’s division of badminton, defeating International Students Association competitor Varun Mehta in both games of the finals. In a display of good sportsmanship, she handed Mehta the event trophy. Matt Root of PT Farinon finished third. The champs were Most Valuable Player Brad Bertkau, Shawn Fenton, Mike Wade, Henry Gabathaler, Doug Wall, Mike Taller, Ryan Rubino, and Adam Simpson. FIJI earned third place. An unaffiliated team, The Divas, scored in the waning minutes to beat the independent No Styx squad in the women’s finals, 2-1. The winners were Sally Amen, Danielle Martin, Nicole Krause, Jesslyn Roebuck, and Kristin Tull. The tournament ran from March 3 through April 4 in Kamine Gymnasium.
Independent teams secured the first two places in the women’s division of floor hockey, with Sparks overcoming Destruitas in the final, 4-2, following a 7-1 regular season record. Team members included Most Valuable Player Amy Kalista, Miriam Habeeb, Emily Thomas, and Patty Abrams. Starting Leopard quarterback Marko Glavic took MVP honors in leading the independent Rusty Trombones to victory in the men’s division, 12-3 over Chi Phi, to cap off an undefeated campaign. His teammates were Matt Bartle, Mark Wells, Mike McGinnis, Mike Kaufman, Matt Young, Tom Emanski, Brad Armstrong, and John Zazzu.
