On July 9, Richard G. Weiss ’71 was named vice president of research and development for Imation Corp., a data-storage company. Based in Oakdale, Minn., the company was
originally 3M’s Data Storage Division which produced the first data storage tape in 1953.
Weiss has more than a decade of experience in magnetic media development and commercialization with both 3M and Pfizer. Most recently, he was technical director for 3M’s MicroreplicationTechnologyCenter, leading a division that is an integral part of the manufacturing supply chain for all of 3M’s microreplicated products.
“Weiss is a seasoned executive who has the proven technical leadership, global experience and strategic skill set we need as we expand and grow our solid
technology platforms,” said Frank Russomanno, president, Imation’s Data Storage and Media Services.
Previously, Weiss served in various technology development capacities at 3M and Pfizer, including leadership in advancement efforts in laboratory and product design, computer tape products, diskettes, and commercial audio and video tape. Before leading the microreplication technology center, Weiss was technical director for both the specialty film laboratory and the senior technical director for 3M Europe. He sponsored the invention, development, and staffing of 3M’s multilayer optical film that utilizes 1,000 micro-layers to manage light and effectively double the brightness of a notebook computer display.
After earning a bachelors degree in chemistry from Lafayette, Weiss earned a
doctorate in chemistry from the University of Virginia. He has conducted postdoctoral research at both the University of Virginia and IowaStateUniversity, and has published 13 articles in major scientific journals.
