Three concerts, a magician/illusionist, screenings of the film Anger Management, and varsity sports action are part of the schedule of campus events this weekend.

Lafayette Activities Forum will screen Anger Management 7 and 10 p.m. today and Saturday, and 10 p.m. Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday in Limburg Theater of Farinon College Center. Tickets cost $2. Released in April, the movie is rated PG-13 for crude sexual content and language.

The plot: A mild-mannered businessman (Adam Sandler) is wrongly accused of a crime and sentenced to an anger management program, where he discovers that his instructor (Jack Nicholson) is an unbalanced man with his own serious anger management problem, and is probably the one person in the world most capable of making his new student blow his lid.

Later this month, LAF will show Daddy Day Care, Sept. 12-16; Bruce Almighty, Sept. 19-23; and Chicago, Sept. 23-26.

The men’s soccer team will take on Haverford 7 p.m. today in the first match of the Puma Soccer Classic at Metzgar Fields. The Leopards come into the contest with one win and one tie, the latter of which they earned in 110 scoreless minutes against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers last Sunday in the title game of the Adidas Kickoff Classic in Baltimore. They earned a 2-1 victory over Robert Morris the prior Friday and finished second overall in the tournament based on goal differential.

Pianist Skip Wilkins, assistant professor of music at Lafayette, will perform in a jazz quartet 8 p.m. today at the Williams Center for the Arts. Wilkins and vocalist Doris Spears will give a noon preview of the concert that day in the Williams Center. Both events are free and open to the public. The evening concert will feature Wilkins and Spears with tenor saxophonist Larry McKenna, bassist Roy Cumming, and drummer Glenn Davis (see related story).

Magician Mike Super, named the 2001 Novelty/Live Entertainer of the Year and nominee for the 2000 and 2002 Performing Arts Entertainer of the Year, will bring his act to the Farinon Center 9-10:30 p.m. today. The free event is sponsored by Lafayette Activities Forum.

Super started studying magic at six years old and now travels with $150,000 worth of equipment all across the United States. He is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and The Society of American Magicians, and has performed for such celebrities as Paul Reiser, Regis Philbin, Robin Leach, and Joan Rivers. His tricks include making an audience member “levitate,” making it “snow” from his bare hands, and “breathing life” into a piece of paper to make it “dance” in a stranger’s hand.

The football team will open its season by hosting the Marist Red Foxes 1 p.m. Saturday at Fisher Field. Chosen to finish fourth in the Patriot League this fall, the Leopards look to confound the experts as well as record a second straight season-ending victory against archrival Lehigh University.

A public reception will honor artist Rhonda Wall 4-6 p.m. Saturday in the Richard A. and Rissa W. Grossman Gallery of the Williams Visual Arts Building. Wall is exhibiting small collages and digital reinterpretations of those works, which she created at the Visual Arts Building.

Pacifica Quartet and pianist Ursula Oppens will continue the Williams Center’s 20th anniversary season 8 p.m. Saturday. They will perform quartets by Haydn and Mendelssohn and the majestic Piano Quintet of Dmitri Shostakovich. Tickets cost $4 with Lafayette ID and $18 for the public.

Pianist Jennifer Marie will perform 10-11:30 p.m. Saturday at Gilbert’s in a free concert sponsored by Lafayette Activities Forum. Hailing from Rochester, N.Y., Marie combines the pop, rock, and jazz genres. According to one critic, “hearing her sing, you realize that she is one of those rare artists that could achieve both mainstream success and musical credibility at the same time.” She has been credited as having “a beautiful voice” while a recent show was called “ a knockout performance.”

Marie’s first demo caught the attention of producer Armand John Petri, who has worked with acts such as the Goo-Goo Dolls, and 10,000 Maniacs. Marie and Petri quickly worked together on her Lizard and Live on the Edge CDs. With a third CD on the way, Marie has set up her own record label, Dazzo Records. “I love getting on stage, playing my songs and getting in that groove where people are feeling that vibe,” she says. “That’s what makes all the in-between stuff worth it.”

The men’s soccer team will play its second match in the Puma Soccer Classic 3 p.m. Sunday against Rider at Metzgar Fields. The Broncos currently hold a record of no wins and two defeats, having lost 2-1 in overtime to Monmouth at home in the Bronc Fall Classic last Sunday.
