A funk concert, film screenings of Chicago, a College Theater production, the second annual Block pARTy, varsity athletics, and an art reception are on the schedule of campus events this weekend.
Lafayette Activities Forum will bring Chicago to the Limburg Theater of Farinon College Center 7 and 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 p.m. Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday in Limburg Theater. Tickets cost $2. Winner of six Academy awards, including Best Picture, Chicago stars Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Queen Latifah. Running at one hour, 40 minutes, the film version of a Broadway hit is rated PG-13 for sexual content and dialogue, violence, and thematic elements. It was released in December 2002 by Miramax Films.
The plot: In the Roaring ’20s, Chicago chorus girl Roxie Hart (Zellweger) lands in jail after shooting her unfaithful lover. There she meets Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones), another chorus girl and murderess, who is enjoying media attention and legal manipulation, care of her attorney, Billy Flynn (Gere). Soon enough, however, Flynn takes Roxie’s case as well, and Velma finds herself old news as Roxie is now the most famous murderess in town, on her way to getting out of jail and becoming a star. The two go through a series of attempts at getting what they both want (often conflicting): freedom and fame.
Philadelphia Funk Authority, a high-energy, nine-piece band, will play music ranging from James Brown to Santana to Dave Matthews, and anything in between during a free concert in the Farinon Center Atrium 11 p.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday. “Sizzling vocals, a smokin’ horn section, driving bass, and amazing percussion create a sound experience you simply can’t afford to miss,” declares event sponsor Lafayette Activities Forum.
College Theater will present Edward Albee’s The American Dream 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Williams Center for the Arts Black Box Theater (see related story). Tickets cost $6 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 610-330-5009.
The play will be directed by New York actor and alumnus Chris Hutchison ’91, who was guest star on an episode of the NBC sitcom “Ed” and acted in a new play presented by New Federal Theater, Whose Family Values!, that opened in May at the Clurman Theater in Manhattan. An English graduate who was active in College Theater as a student, Hutchison directed Eric Bogosian’s subUrbia at the Williams Center last year.
Music and dance, food and drinks, art, activities, and more will be part of the second annual Block pARTy 11 a.m. Saturday, leading up to the 1 p.m. kickoff of the football team’s game against Princeton. The event will be held on Parsons Street between Hamilton and McCartney, opposite the Fisher Field entrance.
Following the Block pARTy, the football team will take on Princeton 1 p.m. at Fisher Field. Both teams are looking to rebound from losses, with Lafayette falling 19-13 to Towson two weeks ago and the Tigers losing to Lehigh 28-13. Lafayette comes into the game with the top-ranked defense in the country — first in total defense by giving up just 154.5 yards per game, first in pass defense with 55.0 yards per game, and first in pass efficiency defense by allowing just a 56.09 rating. The Leopards should be ready for action after enjoying their first scheduled bye week since the 1989 season.
The men’s soccer team (5-2-1) will host Colgate 3 p.m. Saturday at Metzgar Fields in its Patriot League opener. Last Saturday, forward Jamie Mullarkey ’03 (Cramlington, England) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season and assisted two others in a 4-1 home win against Monmouth.
The second half of the doubleheader will feature the women’s soccer team against Patriot League foe Bucknell at 7 p.m. The Leopards (1-6-3 overall, 0-1 Patriot League) will look to rebound when they visit St. Peter’s this evening (Wednesday) after suffering 1-0 losses in their previous two games.
On Sunday, the rest of the campus will have a chance to hit the pitch during a soccer tournament that will start at noon on March Field as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Those interested in participating should call contact mechanical engineering major Farah Arabe ’04 (Lima, Peru) at arabef@lafayette.edu.
A reception will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday for Polish artist Ludwika Ogorzelec at the Williams Center art gallery. Photo updates on the installation that she has been creating with bamboo and plastic wrap at the Williams Center, “Space Crystallizations Cycle,” are available on the Williams Center gallery’s web page. The work will remain on exhibit through Sunday, Oct. 12.
