Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection and the Chaplain’s Office are sponsoring “Making Lafayette a Green Campus,” an open forum on campus environmental issues, noon today in Interfaith Chapel, Hogg Hall.
Lunch may be brought or purchased for $3.
College officials and LEAP members will discuss Lafayette’s recycling policy and plans.
In his comments to the faculty on Aug. 26, President Arthur J. Rothkopf ’55 stated: “Following discussions with students (members of LEAP), faculty, and administrators interested in recycling and conservation, a basic campus recycling and conservation policy has been adopted. Plant Operations will serve as the primary point of coordination for the program, and George Xiques will be the coordinator for this academic year. Success requires the cooperation and commitment of all constituencies.”
LEAP also is teaming up with CHILL (Creating a Harmonious, Interesting, and Livable Lafayette) and the Neighborhood Society on Saturday to clean up College Hill and helping secure planters to the ground. For more information, contact economics & business and German double major Hart Feuer ’05 (Portland, Ore.).
The group also holds outdoor excursions, including an Oct. 11-12 camping trip to Hickory Run State Park. “In addition to eating s’mores, we will be hiking and visiting the breathtaking boulder field,” notes LEAP. Free food and transportation will be provided. For more information or to reserve a place on the trip, contact physics major Mike Kaczmarczik ’06 (Elkins Park, Pa.).
LEAP’s activities include recycling advocacy, peer education on environmental issues, and volunteering for causes related to the environment. Each year, it sponsors Earth Week at Lafayette. The group also seeks to promote appreciation of nature through outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and canoeing.
