President Arthur J. Rothkopf ’55 will be featured in an interview to be televised during an Easton mayoral debate held at the studios of Lehigh Valley PBS station WLVT Channel 39 8 p.m. tomorrow.
Featuring Republican candidate Phil Mitman and Democrat nominee Dan Corpora, the event will be broadcast live (Service Electric station 12 and RCN station 8) as “Tempo Townhall.” The show will be rebroadcast 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
Rothkopf’s taped interview and others with interim mayor Michael McFadden and owners of two downtown businesses, the River Grille restaurant and Lipkin’s Furniture, will be shown during a break in the debate. Rothkopf discusses how Easton and Lafayette benefit each other; the College’s commitment to downtown Easton; how a vibrant community helps attract students, faculty, and staff; and how the College’s presence helps make Easton a good place to start and grow a business.
In the five-minute segment, Rothkopf also talks about the vitality Easton enjoyed when he was a Lafayette student during the “pre-mall” era. Students walked down the hill several times a week, he notes, and the city is moving in that direction again after a less positive period. He acknowledges that more progress needs to be made, but credits Easton with making great strides. He also cites student involvement in the community through the Landis Community Outreach Center and Technology Clinic courses.
After the taped segment runs, the broadcast will return to the live debate, with host Amy Burkett asking the candidates to address the topics brought up in the piece, including major challenges that the next mayor will face, such as attracting new businesses and enlarging the tax base.
In addition, Rothkopf will moderate a debate between the candidates 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in Colton Chapel. Cosponsored by the Morning Call, the League of Women Voters of Northampton County, and Lafayette’s Meyner Center for the Study of State and Local Government, the forum will be broadcast by WFMZ-TV Channel 69.
