The orchestra and chamber wind ensembles will present a joint concert 3 p.m. Sunday at the Williams Center for the Arts.
The orchestra will perform Sonate by Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764), Andante Cantabile by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), and St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst (1874-1934). In the last piece, the Intermezzo portion will feature violinistTeruhisa Haruguchi ’07 (Short Hills, N.J.) and Finale (The Dargason) will feature violinist Elizabeth Dethoff ’05 (Reading, Pa.), a chemistry major.
“It will be a nice, somewhat short program, with interesting pieces,” says Marka Young, director of string ensembles. “The Sonata by Jean-Marie Leclair is not done very often and is a pretty, French baroque work that was composed by one of the first virtuosos of the violin. The Tchaikovsky AndanteCantabile, on the other hand, is quite well known and very lovely. The program ends with the St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst, better known for composing The Planets. This is a rich and wonderful piece for string orchestra that uses folk melodies among its more classical moments.”
“The orchestra is made up of a dedicated group of string players who are very enjoyable to work with,” she adds.
The Flute Choir will perform Fanfare 20 byJames Christensen (1935- ) and Salsita by Victor Rojas (1948- ). The Wind Quintet will perform Canon from Suite, Op. 57 by Charles Lefebvre (1843-1917) and H. Voxman, ed., and Rustic Holiday by Paul Koepke. The groups are led by Susan Charlton, director of chamber wind ensembles.
