Giving by Lafayette employees to the United Way campaign went from $23,500 in 2002 to $31,233 this year, an increase of 33%. The number of contributors increased from 89 to 137, a jump of 54%.

“Thanks to all who have made this year’s effort a success,” says Gary Evans, special assistant to the president and fund-raising chair for the Lafayette’s United Way fund drive. “Together we have supported a number of worthwhile agencies and, more importantly, we have helped many of our needy neighbors. On behalf of those we have helped, I express sincere appreciation.”

Evans cites Bud Martin, professor of chemical engineering, for completing the logistical work of keeping track of gifts and pledges, informing the payroll office about payroll deduction, and traveling to the United Way office on a regular basis to deliver pledge forms. Martin contributed a significant amount of time on the campaign, notes Evans.

“To increase dollars and participation, I did the obvious,” he says. “I spoke to campus groups — the faculty, administration, and Plant Operations staff. I learned a long time ago that when you share a worthy need with thoughtful and caring people, they will respond. And they did.”
