Starting 8 p.m. in the Farinon Center’s Marlo Room, the free evening of Irish culture will feature an appearance by the Maureen O’Grady School of Irish Dancing. Members of Blackwater will then lead a musical sesiun (Irish musical jam session).
The night will include the sounds of traditional instruments such as fiddle, Irish flute and whistles, button accordion, guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, and bodhran. Refreshments will be served.
Since its inception in 1992, the Maureen O’Grady School of Irish Dancing has trained thousands of boys and girls in the art form of traditional Irish step dancing. Its dancers have performed at countless festivals, ceremonies, and competitions, and have graced stages in the Lehigh Valley and beyond, including Carnegie Hall, Vancouver, and Dublin.
O’Grady dancers are also favorites at Celtic Classic, the Allentown St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and Mayfair. They have also been invited to dance with renowned Irish recording stars including the Cheiftains, Eileen Ivers, and Natalie MacMaster. They have won regional and national championships, and qualified for the World Championships in Ireland and around the globe.
Formed in 1996, Blackwater plays a variety of Celtic styles. Original compositions and innovative arrangements freshen the mix for a show that has been described as “sheer ceili aerobics!”
