More than 30 alumni will discuss their job experiences during the first Leopard Career Connections Day noon-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28.
Seniors and juniors are given first priority for the event, which features networking and information sharing. Registration is in person at Career Services, 201 Hogg Hall. If any spaces are left by Wednesday, sophomores and first-year students may register.
The day will begin with a keynote address by Federal Judge Joel Pisano ’71, followed by a series of concurrent panel discussions throughout the afternoon. Students can attend the panels most relevant to their interests.
Alumni panelists in “Entrepreneurs – From Idea to Implementation” will discuss how they turned their ideas into reality. They will describe how their idea was born, how the business plan was developed, how they got started, and the pitfalls that occurred along the way.
In “Public Service Careers,” alumni will discuss the benefits of working in public service and the satisfaction that they receive. “Learn how large the scope of ‘public service’ actually is,” states Career Services.
In “Pursuing an MBA,” alumni from various majors and industries will share their stories of how and why they chose to pursue an MBA. They will discuss the benefits of earning an MBA soon after college versus acquiring work experience first. Challenges faced by new MBA graduates entering the job market also will be addressed.
“Nuts and Bolts of Networking” speakers will cover ways in which networking with fellow Leopards helped their careers. The panel will offer tips on how to approach contacts and what kind of help to expect.
“The International Student Perspective” will feature international student alumni, who will discuss the challenges of finding an employer for sponsorship and dealing with documentation. They will also describe their experiences in choosing a graduate program and adjusting to various work environments.
In “Liberal Arts Majors – Finding your Niche,” alumni will discuss how to market liberal arts education and skills to employers. Guidelines on how to conduct a job search also will be provided.
“Survival Skills from Young Alumni” will feature graduates from the past five years, who will give advice and share their experiences with learning to live on a budget and balancing work and life obligations.
“Etiquette in the Workplace” will provide guidelines for behavior in work-related situations. Metallurgical engineering graduate Bruce A. Vakiener ’62, president of Vakiener Associates in Bloomsbury, N.J., will discuss social events associated with the professional setting and how behavior directly impacts career success.
The event will conclude with a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres and a raffle. It will allow for more individual discussion and follow-up on topics covered during the sessions.
