Annette Russo ’80, senior manager of global environment, health, and safety and mobility for telecommunications firm Avaya Inc. in Basking Ridge, N.J., will speak on “Trends in Environmental Programs and Legislation and Industry Response in a Post-9/11 World” noon tomorrow in Van Wickle Hall room 108.

“Changes in business practices and regulatory legislative trends have forced industrial environment and safety organizations to change their focus,” says Russo. “In addition, the increased focus on homeland and industrial security has led to environment and safety practices becoming an integral part of business continuity planning.I will provide some insight as to how these changes have affected the environment and safety group that I lead.”
Since beginning her career as a mud logger in the petroleum industry, Russo has held positions in environmental consulting and industrial and corporate environment and safety compliance organizations. Her Lafayette education prepared her “very well” for her career in environmental, health, and safety management, she says.
“I also believe that the communications and analytical skills I learned at Lafayette have helped me to succeed not only in my chosen field, but in other fields where I have been given an opportunity to work. Finally, my professors were very supportive and helped to give me the confidence to take on challenges that others weren’t willing to take on.”
The next lecture in the Geology Spring Seminar Series will take place Friday, March 5, featuring Dana Emerson ’03, a magna cum laude graduate with a double major in geology and anthropology & sociology. She will discuss the work she has done to help students find short-term options for post-graduation work or experience, including participating in the Student Conservation Association internship program and the AmeriCorps program within the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
On March 22, Sheila Hutcherson, an underground mapping and ore control geologist for Newmont Mining Company, Carlin, Nev., will talk about “Geology from Beneath the Surface — Gold and Platinum Mining from a Geologist’s Point of View.”
