An Election 2004 Forum was held 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Kirby Hall of Civil Rights auditorium.
Economics and business major Mitchell Feld ’05 (Randolph, N.J.) moderated the event, asking questions to those in attendance on a variety of topics related to the candidates and issues surrounding the presidential election.
The event was sponsored by the Watson Hall resident advisers, including Feld, Leslie Saint ’04, David Homsher ’04, Rebecca Jackson ’06, David Van Der Beek ’06, Mayank Lahiri ’05, and Josie Dykstra ’05. The College Republicans and College Democrats student groups are providing support.
The goal was to raise awareness and encourage discussion of all candidates and issues involved in the upcoming presidential election.
“The reason we have titled this event as a ‘forum’ is to avoid the debate style of having two opposing sides with others in attendance simply observing,” Feld said before the event. “Our hope is to have students, professors, and administrators responding to and questioning others’ remarksWith the Democratic primaries almost complete and a nominee virtually in hand, discussion of the election has already begun. It is important to raise awareness now so all can follow the stories that develop until Election Day.”
Turnout has always been an issue in deciding elections, he noted, and it appears to be a larger issue this year with another close election, according to initial polls.
“Having all members of the Lafayette community not only discussing and being aware of the election, but also respecting and commenting on each others’ opinions would be a wonderful accomplishment,” added Feld.
