Professors will outline Lafayette study abroad programs in Belgium and Germany in upcoming forums.

William Hornfeck and John Greco, professors of electrical and computer engineering, and Edmond Saliklis, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, will discuss the program in Brussels, Belgium, at an initial informational session 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in Acopian Engineering Center room 315.

Brussels hosts the headquarters for the European Union, NATO, and many international businesses. Students take one or two courses from a Lafayette faculty member and additional courses at Vesalius College, an English-speaking liberal arts college in the Free University of Brussels. A wide range of courses is available, including several in engineering, which enables engineering majors to participate in the study-abroad semester.

“I liked being in Brussels; it was easy to jump on a train and travel through western Europe,” says Tim Wetzel ’02, who fulfilled the social sciences and humanities requirements of his chemical engineering major in Brussels. “Our art history class toured major European cities, including Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Paris. We learned how history has shaped those citiesI have a better understanding of the European Union. I visited the European Parliament and Commission through one of my courses.”

Rado Pribic, Oliver Edwin Williams Professor of Languages and chair of the International Affairs and Russian and Eastern European Studies programs, will give a presentation on a new study abroad opportunity in Germany 7 p.m. Monday, April 5, at the Max Kade Center for German Studies, Pardee Hall room 429.

Pribic will be the resident director of the program at International University, Bremen, a new English-language university specializing in biology, chemistry, geology, and engineering. It offers full programs in social sciences and German.

Students will learn about the European Union and Germany — its politics, history, economics, and arts. All will be enrolled in a culture and society course with regular field trips to European cities.
