As part ofits Shad Arts Celebration, the Arts Community of Easton (ACE) will hold two free haiku workshops with Marilyn Hazelton Sunday in Williams Center for the Arts room 108.
A workshop will be held 3-4:30 p.m. for adults and teenagers interested in haiku and/or in submitting “shadku” — haiku related to water and fish — to the Shad Arts Celebration. They can develop or refine their entries under Hazelton’s guidance. Registration is not needed.
A separate workshop will be held 1-2 p.m. for children ages 7-12, who will write and illustrate haiku, creating a form of art called haiga. Themes for the haiga will include water of all kinds and fish.No previous writing or art experience is necessary. Registration is appreciated, but not required.
Hazelton, a longtime teacher and writer of haiku, will share information from the World Haiku Association Conference that she attended in Japan last October. ACE is sponsoring a call for shadku as well as “shadricks” — limericks about fish (shad in particular), fishing, and rivers. A selection will be included in the 22nd Annual Forks of the Delaware Shad Fishing Tournament and Festival Doo-Dah Parade Sunday, May 2, in downtown Easton. Shadku will also be posted on the ACE website, and a selection will be printed and available during the Shad Arts Celebration.
Submissions may be made to shadarts2004@hotmail.com or by postcardÂ, with one entry per card, to ACE – shadku/shadricks, PO Box 465, Easton PA 18044. The deadline is Wednesday, April 21.
ACE is helping to organize the Doo-Dah parade, an irreverent, light-hearted, loosely organized, and sometimes silly spoof of a traditional parade. Entries in the parade, which celebrates the annual American shad run in the Delaware River, should be “fishy” in nature, or at least silly, and family friendly. The ACE website has additional information, entry suggestions, photographs from previous parades, and an application form.
The postmark deadline is Monday for submissions of artwork depicting fish, fishing, and scenes along the region’s rivers and waterways. Slides and entry forms (see www.eastonart.net) should be sent to Connexions Gallery, 213 Northampton Street, Easton, PA 18042. Accepted entries will be displayed April 22–May 23 in the Something Fishy exhibition. Jim Hannan will serve as juror.
The competition is open to all artists working in painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, digitally created work, and mixed media.
All work must be completely prepared for hanging with screweyes and wire attached. Plexi or glass must cover all works on paper. Accepted sculpture must be accompanied by its own pedestal or method of presentation. Sculpture must be able to fit through a standard 35-inch door frame.
Entry is free for ACE members and $15 for nonmembers, or free with a new membership. Checks should be payable to “ACE – Something Fishy.” All fees are nonrefundable. Artists may submit up to three artworks for consideration. One slide should be submitted for each two-dimensional work. For three-dimensional work, an artist may submit a primary view and a second or detail slide for a maximum of six slides.
Jurying is by 35mm slides with cardboard or plastic mounts, photographs, or color printouts. Each entry must be clearly marked with artist’s name, title, and dimensions (height x width x depth). The top of the work should be indicated and the number given as listed on the entry form. A self addressed-stamped envelope should be enclosed for return of the slides.
Exhibited works will be sold for the price indicated on the entry form. A commission of 50% will be retained for each work sold during the exhibition: 40% to the gallery and 10% to ACE. Works not for sale should be listed NFS on the entry form. All works must be delivered by the artist/lender. If shipped, they must be sent in reusable crates or cartons and return postage must be provided. Final delivery dates and locations will be indicated in acceptance letters. If hand delivered, the works must be picked up at the conclusion of the exhibition by the date noted on the acceptance letter.

Hannan’s art education began at the Art Students’ League in New York City and continued at Nassau Community College on Long Island. He earned an MFA in studio art from Long Island University in 1994. He retired from a career in the aerospace industry in 1995 to paint full-time. He is a member of ARTSPACE Gallery in Stroudsburg, Carbon County Art League, and Hazelton Art League.
