Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection will hold a Jump ‘n Jam Earth Party, featuring the bands Swagger and Captain Zig and activities supporting environmental justice, 11 p.m. tonight through 2 a.m. Saturday at McKelvy House, 200 High Street.
The free event is part of the Spring Party Challenge, which provides funding for alterative campus social events. Prizes are awarded for parties that excel in one or more categories specified by the program.
Supporting the party’s theme of environmental justice, attendees will paint portrayals of environmental injustices on murals, advertisements for passive activism will be displayed, and statutes will be made from discarded objects. Revelers are encouraged to wear a recycled costume.
Vegan and vegetarian food will be served using recycled platters, cups, plates, and utensils. A root beer keg will be available.
Party organizers are LEAP officers Hart Feuer ’05 (Portland, Ore.), a double major in economics & business and German, and electrical and computer engineering major Kristen Radecsky ’04 (Flemington, N.J.).
“The party will be held outdoors in the lot if the weather is nice. If not, it will be inside the McKelvy house,” says Feuer. “Participants can go shoeless. The murals will be outlined city and landscapes — participants can fill in environmental problems, such as smog, trash, urban sprawl, deforestation.”
Last semester, LEAP teamed up with Students for Social Justice to hold a brown bag about factory farming and vegan Thanksgiving meal.
