Six leaders in the legal field will share insights and provide networking opportunities for students Wednesday evening at the Legal Professions Alumni Panel in the Marquis Hall Faculty Dining Room.

The panel presentations will begin at 6 p.m. with moderator Ed Ahart ’69, managing partner, Schenck, Price, Smith & King. Each will last five to ten minutes and be followed by a question-and-answer session.

The panelists:

  • Stephen Baratta ’78, judge, Northampton County, PA
  • Lisa Butler ’87, vice president, Morgan Stanley
  • Daniel E. Cohen ’65, partner, Laub, Seidel, Cohen, Hof and Reid
  • Robert W. Hyde, Jr., ’78, assistant counsel, safety and environmental, Merck & Company, Inc.
  • Robert Wolff ’82, patent attorney, Air Products & Chemicals, Inc.

They will discuss how they made decisions about their graduate education and careers, their main influences, and other topics.

Following the panel session, dinner will begin at about 7 p.m. Each panelist will sit at a table with students and converse during dinner, and students will be invited to change tables for dessert. The program is expected to conclude at 8:15 p.m.

Typical student questions that will be answered during the event include:

  • Do I want to be a lawyer? How do I get a clear and correct picture of what a legal career involves, its demands, rewards, satisfactions, frustrations and possibilities?
  • What should I be doing during my undergraduate years to prepare for law school and a legal career? What curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular choices and experiences will best help me develop legally relevant knowledge, skills and characteristics?
  • Which law schools should I apply to and attend? What criteria and selection process should guide my choices?
  • How can I put my best foot forward in the law school application process? How do I most effectively identify and present the most legally attractive dimensions of the real me?
  • What should I be doing during my law school years to prepare for a legal career? What curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular choices, and experiences will best help me develop legally relevant knowledge, skills and characteristics?
  • What kind of lawyer would I like to be? How do I choose among the varieties of legal practice by specialty, location, and institutional context?
  • What legal jobs should I pursue and how do I get them or at least the best of them?
