The Men’s Volleyball Club overcame a 2-1 deficit in games to defeat DeSales University Wednesday and build momentum for this weekend’s Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Volleyball Conference championship tournament at Haverford College in Philadelphia.
The Leopards dropped the first game, 18-25, then traded a win and a loss with three-point margins to find themselves one defeat from elimination. They pulled together to win handily, 25-17 and 15-9.
The victory clinched second place in the nine-team North Division and secured a bid in the championship tournament, which begins 9 a.m. tomorrow.
“We started off a little slow on Wednesday, but once DeSales started winning, we turned on the heat and came away with the victory,” says civil engineering major Kyle DeLabar ’05 (North Catasauqua, Pa.), outside hitter and club president.
The team split a pair of games at Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) Wednesday night, beating conference foe LCCC, 3-2, but losing three straight to York College. The latter was not a division opponent and therefore didn’t hurt the Leopards in the standings, but the defeat dropped the team to 13th seed in the tournament rankings.
Lafayette will compete in a pool with Eastern, Messiah, and Albright Colleges. The top three teams in round-robin play will advance to the next round, where the tournament continues in a bracketed, single-elimination format.
“The past two years we made it to the tournament, but failed to make it out of pool play,” says DeLabar.“I think this is our year to move on.”
