Loyal Leopard Ed Ely ‘76 passes away On Jan. 26, Ed Ely ‘76, past president of the Lafayette Alumni of the LehighValley, died at the age of 58. Ely received the Chapter Support Person of the Year award at the most recent Volunteer Weekend. He was an active member of the Lafayette Alumni of the LehighValley, serving on the LALV Executive Committee for several years, including chapter president 2001-03. Ely was a project manager for Ingersoll Rand and Ingersoll Dresser Pump Co. He started in Painted Post in 1965 and then transferred to the Ingersoll Rand, Phillipsburg, N.J. plant in 1970 where he worked for 35 years. A part-time student of Lafayette, Ely earned an A.B. in engineering in 1976 after earning his associate degree in mechanical technology and machine design from Alfred State College of Technology in 1965. He attended most chapter events, particularly those involving students, and was an avid supporter of Leopard basketball. He enjoyed alumni activities and his friendships and associations became an important part of his life. His love for car racing grew from living near Watkins Glen, N.Y. during the Grand Prix racing years. He was a 30-year member of the Sports Car Club of America and a technical inspector for CART. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. His wife, Marlene of Palmer Township, survives him. They were married for 25 years. Ely was a member of College Hill Presbyterian Church in Easton.
