Lafayette Environmental Awareness and Protection (LEAP) took the $500 prize for Best Overall Party and another $100 for People’s Choice Award in the 2004 Spring Party Challenge.
Hosted by McKelvy House, LEAP’s Jump n’ Jam Earth Party featured live bands and activities supporting environmental justice.
The runners up, each of which received $100, were the Arts Society, Swingin’ at Marlo’s; Students for Social Justice, Return to the ’60s — Peace, Love and Happiness; and Africans Creating African Consciousness and Interest Abroad, Experience Africa Party.
Hispanic Society of Lafayette received $100 for Noche CalienteMelt to be One, winner of Best Multi-Cultural Theme.
Other groups participating in the Party Challenge were International Students Association, A Gangster World, and Dry Surfers, Masquerade Ball.
Designed to create alternative social gatherings on campus, the Spring Party Challenge is organized by Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM), a consortium of campus peer education groups. Judging criteria for the parties include multi-cultural themes, decorations, entertainment, activities, food, beverages, use of natural resources, attendance, and overall enthusiasm. The parties had to be free, start no earlier than 10:30 p.m., and last at least 2.5 hours.
“The Party Challenge is an excellent opportunity for our students to explore what they really want from their social life in college,” says TEAM adviser Cindy Adams, health promotion coordinator and organizer of the Party Challenge. “It challenges them to use their imaginations to make their personal lives a little more fun. They enjoy the incentive being offered to create something special for themselves and for their peers. The students, of course, need to plan their social lives all the time, but it’s nice to have a great incentive to do so.
“LEAP had a very small budget this year and so I was glad that they won so much of the money,” she adds. “They worked really hard and from what I heard had an awesome party.”
Computer science major Geoff Oxholm ’04 (Merion Station, Pa.) served as webmaster for Party Challenge this semester, organizing on-line voting for the People’s Choice Award.
“He is also a ‘father’ of TEAM along with Michael Lestingi’04 and founder of CHILL; he came up with the name, which stands for Creating a Healthy, Interesting and Liveable Lafayette,” says Adams. “He has been dedicated to peer education and bettering the community since he arrived on campus.”
