CH2M Hill, Inc. hydrogeologist Ian Zmudzin ’03 will discuss “Parking Lot Geology: Geologists and Consulting” noon today in Van Wickle Hall room 108.
Lunch will be provided at no charge to students and for $3 to faculty and staff.
As part of his talk, Zmudzin will discuss his experiences as a hydrogeologist in the business of environmental consulting. His talk will include examples of the types of projects and experiences he has been exposed to in his career.
“Working as a hydrogeologist in the consulting world can be very demanding,” he says. “A great deal of travel and long hours are involved, but I have found the work to be very satisfying thus far. While the work can be somewhat mundane at times, as happens with any job, I find that the work is, more often than not, challenging and interesting. I learn something new every day.”
Zmudzin is working toward becoming a certified professional geologist. He also is enrolled as a part-time student at the University of Pennsylvania in its master of environmental studies program with a concentration in environmental geology. He plans on discussing his experiences in graduate school as part of his talk.
“I just started my graduate studies this past semester, and have found it a bit difficult to balance a full-time job with my studies. However, I am confident that the experiences I had at Lafayette will help me to figure it all out in due time.”
A former Crew Club captain at Lafayette, Zmudzin is employed in CH2M Hill’s Philadelphia office.
As a double major, he was fortuante to get to know professors in the government & law and geology & environmental geosciences departments, he says.
“I really felt that they expected nothing but the best from my academic performance, and I have done my best to try and carry that attitude over into my professional and private lives,” he says. “Dr. Lawrence Malinconico, Professor Kevin Cameron, Professor Kathryn Schubel — all of the professors whom I studied under had an effect on me and helped me in shaping who I have become.”
