SynchroMotion, Lafayette’s newest dance organization, will provide the campus with a glimpse into the many talents of its members this weekend during the group’s first annual spring performance.

The club, which is a year old this semester, will be performing 10 pieces on April 7 at 8 p.m. and April 8 at 1 p.m. in the Williams Center for the Arts. There will also be performances held by the Lafayette Dancers, the Hispanic Society, and NIA.

“Our diverse collection includes modern, jazz, tap, acrobatic, gypsy, Ukrainian, and Hip Hop,” says SynchroMotion president and mechanical engineering major Lindsay Hannum ’07 (North East, Md.). “The diversity draws from the different backgrounds of our dancers as the performance is, with the exception of one piece, student choreographed.”

Hannum and mechanical engineering major Jill Bisplinghoff ’07 (Rye, N.H.) started organizing the club in fall 2004. Both met with Allison Blatt, operations director of the Williams Center and director of the Arts Society, and decided to form a group where experienced student dancers could teach others how to dance in a specific style.

“Dance has always been an amazing outlet for me,” Hannum says. “When I decided to come here, I knew Lafayette did not have a dance program, however I made it my goal to bring more dance to the Lafayette Campus. I hope that our performances this weekend will show the Lafayette community that even though we do not have a dance program here, our campus is flooded with talented dancers.”

SynchroMotion is open to the Lafayette community and does not hold auditions. Members meet twice a week in the exercise studios of Kirby Sports Center for student run dance classes and rehearsals. They have also been able to work with Williams Center Director Ellis Finger and have hosted master classes with most of center’s dance performers.

“Our first official year as a club has been a huge success,” says Hannum. “We have already surpassed our goals for the year and built a solid membership. I feel that this will continue to grow as new classes join the Lafayette campus.”

The group plans to continue both the spring performance and the “So You Think You Can Dance Contest” held in the fall on an annual basis. They will be performing in the ISA Extravaganza later this month, as well as other events throughout the year. Hannum hopes as the club continues to grow that the “Series of Master Classes” previously hosted by the Arts Society can be brought back.

“It is my dream that SynchroMotion will continue to receive support from the college and one day will lead to the development of a dance program at Lafayette,” says Hannum.
