The rhythm of drums and clapping will fill the night air April 13, as Brazilian martial arts experts perform in the Farinon Atrium starting at 8 p.m.

Sponsored by the Lafayette African and Caribbean Students Association (LACSA), Eduardo Ferreira, a master in the Brazilian martial art Capoeira, will discuss the historical, social, and cultural significance of the art form at 6:15 p.m. in room 104 Kirby Hall. The lecture will be followed by a performance and audience participation in Farinon.

“This event is important because it heightens cultural awareness in a fun and exciting way through dance,” says LACSA president Jhenelle Andrade ’06 (Bronx, N.Y.) a double major in anthropology and sociology and Africana studies. “This is a medium that everyone can enjoy and become a part of. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about Brazilian culture.”

Capoeira was developed by African slaves in Brazil, where on the pretence of dance, they instead practiced fighting techniques to increase their chances for independence. The performance will be very dance-like with flips, spins, and sparring done in sync with heavy percussion music.

Ferreira has studied Capoeira for almost 20 years and founded RaĆzes do Brasil (Roots of Brazil) in New York City. His lecture will trace the history of Capoeira and what it has evolved into today.

“I hope that the audience learns what Capoeira is and the role in plays in Brazilian culture. I also hope that the audience will learn a few steps to take home with them as well,” says Andrade.

The program is also sponsored by H.S.L., I.S.A., L.I.N.C., McKelvy Scholars Program, L.A.F., A.C.A.C.I.A., History Club, and the Office of Intercultural Development.
