A change in Lafayette’s motor vehicle and traffic regulations will allow sophomores to register vehicles with the College and park in a designated lot at Forks Town Center along Sullivan Trail.

The new regulations will take effect with the next school year. Until now, only juniors and seniors have been authorized to register motor vehicles with the College. Sophomores and freshman, except those commuting from their permanent homes, have been prohibited from doing so.

The College’s L-CATS shuttle service will continue providing free transportation between campus and the Forks Town Center lot. The lot was previously used for student parking during construction of the Sullivan Lane parking deck before its opening in January.

“The college is attempting to accommodate [the student’s wishes].” says Hugh Harris, director of public safety. “I think this is a nice enhancement for the sophomores.”

All students owning/operating motor vehicles at the College must apply for registration within 24 business hours after arrival on campus. The fee for sophomores registering vehicles and using the Forks Town Center lot will be $200 per year. The regular fee for student vehicle registration and a parking assignment on Lafayette property is $305. Failure to register a vehicle will result in a $350 fine.

Each summer, the Public Safety Office sends out a mailing of college traffic and parking regulations to juniors and seniors. This summer the office will also send a separate mailing to sophomores informing them of the change in the regulations.
