Arthur J. Rothkopf ’55, president emeritus of Lafayette, has been named to the American University Board of Trustees. He is among seven new trustees selected from a pool of 85 nominees.

He is senior vice president and counselor to the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where his responsibilities focus on education and workforce development. He is leading a new program that will assess how each state’s public education system is preparing its students to compete in the 21st century and will recommend specific reforms to improve competitiveness. Research will examine return on investment, budget transparency, and the relationship between per pupil spending and student achievement. Partners in this effort include the Center for American Progress, a research and educational institute led by former White House Chief of Staff John Podesta, and Frederick Hess, director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research and a leading voice for education reform in America.

Rothkopf is a member of the Commission on the Future of Higher Education established by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, serves on the board of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and is president of the Pennsylvania Society. He also is a director of two for-profit companies, Bristol West Holdings (listed on the NYSE) and Insurance Services Office, Inc.

Rothkopf, who served as Lafayette’s 15th president, lives in Washington with his wife Barbara.
