In April, Peter Hanson ’61 was married in New Canaan, Conn. Two days later, he sent a note to his class correspondent to share the exciting news with his classmates and other friends in Alumni News. But he had just missed the deadline for the next issue and news of his wedding would have to wait until the fall.

“Print is really behind,” says Hanson, chairman of the Lafayette Publications Committee from the 1970s into the 1980s. “It was frustrating. Shortly after, I received an email from Lafayette’s alumni office announcing the Alumni Online Community and I signed on right away.”

He posted the news of his nuptials and a photo of himself, which, of course, was available for classmates and other alumni to see almost instantaneously.

Hanson is a big believer in the benefits of the Internet. For the past 15 years, he has been paying his bills online, and he regularly communicates electronically with his children (including a daughter and son-in-law who live in Bratislava, Slovakia). For him, Lafayette’s Alumni Online Community is a welcome offering.

“There are many benefits to it,” says the economics graduate, who is retired after a career in publishing and as a college professor. “The biggest benefit is that the online community is quick. You can use it to network and share photos. It’s also a great time saver. I can send one posting for multiple people to see instead of making many phone calls. And, last but not least, it’s free.”

Registration for the Alumni Online Community is available from the alumni web site.
