Acclaimed fiction writer and editor Hannah Tinti will read from Animal Crackers: Stories7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30 in Kirby Auditorium. A question-and-answer session will follow the reading. The event is free and open to the public.

“Hannah Tinti is one of the most exciting, innovative, and fresh young voices in fiction today,” says event organizer Alix Ohlin, assistant professor of English. “In addition to her own work, Hannah is the founder and editor of One Story magazine, which has quickly risen to become an acclaimed source of great writing.”

In the 11 stories that comprise Animal Crackers: Stories, Tinti uses animals as the litmus test for human fears and longings. In “Miss Waldron’s Red Colobus,” a headstrong young African woman is lured by the freedom of the monkeys in the trees. A boy plays chilling games with his pet rabbit in “Slim’s Last Ride,” and an artist restoring dioramas in a natural history museum is haunted by a stuffed black bear in “Preservation.” In the book’s title story, a zoo worker cautiously washes down an elephant while considering the odd, grim fragments of his co-workers’ lives.

“It is a joy to encounter a new short story writer with the bite and sparkling freshness of Hannah Tinti,” stated the Los Angeles Times. “Animal Crackers builds steadily, story by story, introducing us to a writer who has stepped off the safe ground and into realms that promise even more excitement in the years to come.”

Along with publisher Maribeth Batcha, Tinti founded One Story magazine in 2002. The subscription-only magazine features one short story per issue and is published every three weeks.

Tinti’s work has appeared in various magazines and anthologies, including the 2003 edition of Best American Mystery Stories. Animal Crackers: Stories has sold in 13 countries and was a runner-up for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Tinti earned her M.A. from New YorkUniversity. She is currently working on her first novel, Resurrection Men.

Tinti’s visit is sponsored by the English department.
