The student organization Foundation for the Awareness and Alleviation of Poverty (FAAP) will host a charity concert Friday, Oct. 27, to benefit the EastonAreaCommunity Center at St. Anthony’s Church. Boston-based singer/songwriter Joy will perform at 9 p.m. in the Farinon College Center Atrium as part of the group’s Easton Awareness Week.
There is no entrance fee, but FAAP will collect donations in any amount throughout the concert. The event will be catered, with the profits earned from food sales contributed to the community center.
FAAP has a display in Farinon that includes a film featuring images of Easton shot by organization members and facts about the city according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Information on Joy is also available. Those interested may make a donation at FAAP’s table the rest of this week.
“We believe it is important for Lafayette to get involved with Easton Awareness Week because we don’t know enough about Easton,” says FAAP member Stephanie Morillo ’08 (Bronx, N.Y.). “The dichotomies between the communities of Easton and College Hill are great in terms of socioeconomic status and demographics. We are giving the campus an opportunity to see the Easton they do not [normally have the opportunity to] see.”
FAAP also is sponsoring a “Change the World” coin drive this semester. The campus community can contribute coins in the blue piggy banks placed around campus and in departmental offices. All money raised will be donated to the community center.
Joy is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter and senior at Berklee College of Music. She recently started her own artist management company and record label and released her debut album Set Free last month. Currently on tour throughout Boston and the northeast, Joy’s music is a unique blend of emo, soul, and rock.
In addition to FAAP, the concert is cosponsored by the economics and business department, International Students Association, Hispanic Society of Lafayette, AYA magazine, Lafayette Activities Forum, Students for Social Justice, Writing Organization Reaching Dynamic Students, Lafayette African and Caribbean Students Association, and Delta Upsilon fraternity.
