The Concert Choir and Madrigals will celebrate the holiday season with their annual winter concert 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 in the Williams Center for the Arts. The performance, which is sponsored by the music department, is free and open to the public.

Conducted by Jennifer Kelly, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities, and accompanied on piano by Lorenz Maycher, visiting part-time instructor of music, the one hour program presents a wide variety of choral music including madrigals from the 16th century to the present, works by Rossini and Rutter, jazz, and holiday favorites.

Before the concert, guests can get into the holiday spirit while the Brass Ensemble, directed by Ken Brader, performs in the Williams Center lobby at 7:30 p.m. After the concert, there will be cookies and cider accompanied by holiday carols, also in the lobby.

“The students have grown so much this semester. Their energy, dedication, and teamwork pour out of the music,” says Kelly. “The vast majority of students in the performing ensembles are non-music majors from all over the school sharing the goal of music making. It helps to balance their lives. Music is a creative and safe way of allowing self-expression and passion, while facilitating teamwork, and broadening one’s world-view with varied cultures, styles, and languages. It is a wonderful interdisciplinary art.”
