Lafayette’s co-ed a cappella groups Quintessence and Soulfege will give a joint performance 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 in the Farinon College Center Snack Bar. The show is free.

“Both of these groups get together so they can perform,” says chemical engineering major Kaytlin Henry ’07(Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), president of Quintessence and co-musical director of Soulfege. “We have a great time, and the audience does too. At this concert, there will be many different types of music. Quintessence sings mainly jazz music and is a small group with a different sound than most college a cappella. Soulfege sings a variety of pop music and even a TV theme song. There is something that everyone can enjoy at this concert.”

Quintessence is comprised of psychology major Bernadette Balane ’09 (Princeton, N.J.), anthropology and sociology major Kara Boodakian ’07(Winchester, Mass.), civil engineering major Benjamin Flath ’07 (Scotch Plains, N.J.), biochemistry major Marc Lisi ’08 (Orange, Conn.), and psychology major Lindsay Messina ’07 (Basking Ridge, N.J.).

The jazz ensemble will perform “Too Good Too Bad,” “Butterfly,” “God Only Knows,” “Chattanooga,” and “The First Noel.”

Members of Soulfege include Flath, who is co-musical director along with Henry; group president Daniel Massa ’08 (Carlisle, Pa.), a biochemistry major; vice president Timothy Zirkel ’08(Honey Brook, Pa.), who is pursuing B.S. degrees in mathematics and computer science; secretary Gina Colazzio ’09 (Philadelphia, Pa.), a neuroscience major; business manager Balane; Ryan Bancroft ’09 (McDonough, Ga.), a mechanical engineering major; Dustin Bednarz ’08 (Shavertown, Pa.), a biology major; Justin Bruce ’09 (Rochester, N.Y.), a neuroscience major; Elena Dones ’07 (Morristown, N.J.), an English major; Naomi-Beth Itescu ’10 (Havertown, Pa.); Aubrey Kelley-Cogdell ’10 (Cassopolis, Mich.); Jeffrey Lininger ’07 (Malvern, Pa.), a double major in philosophy and economics & business; Christopher Nial ’10 (South Burlington, Vt.); Laura Pritchard ’10 (Holmdel, N.J.); and Paul Sommers ’09 (Wenonah, N.J.), a history major.

Soulfege will perform “Shambala,” “You’re So Vain,” “Suspended,” “Steal My Kisses,” “Fascinate You,” “One of Us,” and the theme song from Gummi Bears.

Lafayette’s youngest a cappella group, Quintessence is a small co-ed jazz ensemble that performs jazz, swing, salsa, standards, and improvisation. They placed third at the 2005 International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella Mid-Atlantic regional finals and received best arrangement honors for its “I Dream of Jeannie” medley, which was arranged by Henry.

The co-ed group Soulfege was founded in 2002. It has performed throughout the LehighValley, including at Easton’s annual Shad Fishing Tournament.
