Drummers from the Wilson Area High School band will hone their skills during a day-long training session Jan. 8 in the Williams Center for the Arts.

The “Percussion Day” will be hosted by James Moyer, associate professor of music and director of bands. He will be joined by Matt Alercia, Wilson band director, to put the students through an intense workshop focusing on playing various percussion instruments in band and orchestra settings.

Moyer says this is the first in what is intended to be an ongoing series that connects local schools with the College’s music department.

“It is vital as we move forward as a college that Lafayette engages area high school students in direct contact with faculty in the Arts,” he says. “With so many outstanding high school music programs in our region, my focus is to bring area bands to our campus for workshops and clinics that place Lafayette in the minds of these students and their teachers.”

Invitations are being sent to band directors from all area schools. Based on interest level in the initial pilot project, Moyer says expanding the workshop to a larger, multi-session event with numerous Lehigh Valley schools participating, is a possibility during the summer.
