Lafayette will celebrate Women’s History Month Feb. 26-March 29 with lectures, brownbag discussions, and a spoken word performance.

Writer and activist Katha Pollitt will present the keynote address, entitled “Are We There Yet? Why Women Aren’t Equal Even If We Think We Are,” 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Oechsle Hall room 224. The event is free and open to the public.

A columnist for The Nation, Pollitt has also written essays for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New Republic, Harper’s, Mirabella, Ms., Glamour, Mother Jones, and The New York Times. She has appeared on NPR’s Fresh Air and All Things Considered, Charlie Rose, The McLaughlin Group, CNN, Dateline NBC, and BBC.

Pollitt is author of Virginity or Death! And Other Social and Political Issues of Our Time, Reasonable Creatures: Essays on Women and Feminism, and Subject to Debate: Sense and Dissents on Women, Politics, and Culture. She also has published a book of poetry called Antarctic Traveller.

Pollitt’s address and other Women’s History Month events are sponsored by the Women’s Studies program, Office of Intercultural Development, Lafayette Activities Forum, Office of Student Life, Association of Lafayette Feminists, Dean of Studies, American Studies department, anthropology and sociology department, College Writing Program, English department, economics and business department, Policy Studies program, and Counseling Center.

  • Feb. 26: 7 p.m. Kirby Hall of Civil Rights room 104; “An Other or Another: How Do You Cross Borders?” Poet Hettie Jones reflects on racial prejudice, the 1950s, family, and art.
  • Feb. 28: 7:30 p.m. Oechsle Hall room 224; “Are We There Yet? Why Women Aren’t Equal Even If We Think We Are.” Writer and activist Katha Pollitt delivers keynote address.
  • March 2: 3 p.m. Farinon College Center, Marlo Room; “State, Society, and Population in Contemporary China.” Susan Greenhalgh, professor of anthropology at University of California-Irvine, speaks as part of Facing the Chinese Century conference. Free registration at the conference website.
  • March 2: 8 p.m. Gilbert’s; “Hot Topics and Funk.” Dramatist, writer, musician, and storyteller Paula Larke presents music and spoken word concert.
  • March 6: 7:30 p.m. Kirby Hall of Civil Rights room 104; “Balancing Act: How Women Can Avoid Burnout in Their 20s, 30s, and Beyond.” English graduate Nora Isaacs ’94, editor and author of Women in Overdrive, visits campus.
  • March 7: 7 p.m. Oechsle Hall room 224; “Women and the World Demand Justice.” Documentary photographer Paula Allen discusses her work, which focuses on women and girls whose outsider status places them within larger social struggles.
  • March 19: noon Farinon Center, Marlo Room West; “Women in the White House.” James Lennertz, associate professor of government and law, will host brownbag event. Lunch provided.
  • March 19: 7 p.m. Oechsle Hall room 224; “Sex Rules.” Maria Falzone brings her comedic performance and lecture to Lafayette.
  • March 23: noon Farinon Center, Marlo Room West; “Women, Work, and Family: Then and Now.” Susan Averett, Dana Professor and head of economics and business, will host brownbag event. Lunch provided.
  • March 26: 4:15 p.m. Kirby Hall of Civil Rights room 104; “Motherhood, Not Marriage.” Kathryn Edin, professor of sociology at University of Pennsylvania, visits campus.
  • March 27: 7:30 p.m. Oechsle Hall room 224; Lecture by Joan Jacobs Brumberg, professor of history at Cornell University. The author of Fasting Girls and The Body Project visits Lafayette.
  • March 29: 7:30 p.m. Oechsle Hall room 224; “Perspectives on Body Image.” Panel discussion.
