Lafayette will be the location of this year’s International Championship of College A Cappella (ICCA) MidAtlantic Region quarterfinal, which will be held 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 in Colton Chapel.
Tickets are $7 for Lafayette students and $10 for the general public. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and CDs from the performing groups will be on sale. The Durby Street Milkmen, comprised of international economics and commerce major Matt Roy ’07 (Long Valley, N.J.) and mathematics-economics major Dan Thorrson ’07 (Saylorsburg, Pa.), will be emcees for the evening.
The event, which is hosted by Lafayette jazz a cappella group Quintessence and co-ed a cappella group Soulfege, will include competitors from six colleges and universities including Lafayette male a cappella group the Chorduroys.
Other groups competing will be Ithacappella from Ithaca College, the Mandarins from Syracuse University, Melic from Elizabethtown College, 36 Madison Ave. from Drew University, and Vocal Point from University of Delaware.
“I am thrilled that we are hosting this competition,” says chemical engineering major Kaytlin Henry ’07(Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), president of Quintessence and co-musical director of Soulfege. “It is a great chance to meet other a cappella groups and do what we love, singing and performing.”
The competitors are judged on their musicianship and performance. As well as a total score, the judges also give out awards for best choreography, best soloist, best vocal percussion, and best arrangement. The top two groups move on to the semi-final round, which will be March 24 at Rutgers University.
The Chorduroys came in second place at last year’s ICCA MidAtlantic Region quarterfinal hosted by Drexel University and also received an award for best choreography.
The group will be performing Feel Like Makin’ Love by Bad Company, Sunshine by Cadence, and Welcome to Paradise by Greenday. Quintessence and Soulfege will also perform during the evening.
“Soulfege and Quintessence have been working hard to put this show together and all the groups competing have been putting in lots of time on their sets. It is going to be a wonderful show,” says Henry.
